The CAD electronics unit of Océ Printing Systems GmbH was looking for a reliable, high-availability virtualization platform to consolidate its servers. Our DRBD®Virtualization Enterprise Cluster provided an ideal solution.
The staff members in charge of CAD electronics in Poing faced the challenge of modernizing their obsolete hardware. Their task was to ensure utmost reliability, system stability and flexibility at reasonable costs.
A number of Sun® Solaris™ servers hosting file services, several individual CAD/CAM applications, as well as two Oracle databases, did no longer meet the requirements. The IT department had to decide whether to acquire a series of new servers and accept a certain degree of under-utilization, to try a somewhat risky server consolidation at application level – or to opt for a virtualization-based consolidation solution.
The DRBD® Virtualization Enterprise Cluster allowed Océ to consolidate five former physical servers as virtual machines in a high-availability cluster with full storage redundancy through the use of DRBD®.
Overall, this ensured higher availability, improved use of resources and full data redundancy at a fraction of the costs that would have arisen from a gradual exchange of the physical, non-redundant servers.
