OpenShift on IBM Z with LINBIT SDS

High-performance software-defined storage with full OpenShift integration, available on IBM Z

OpenShift is RedHat’s enriched version of Kubernetes. An important building block for modern cloud applications. IBM’s Z platform is well known for its track record of being the hardware platform of choice for business critical applications for decades. The LinuxONE platform is optimized for Linux workloads out of the IBM Z portfolio, which is in the spotlight in this context. With these technologies coming together a great platform gets created, ready for the future.

LINBIT SDS® (based on LINSTOR® and Piraeus DS) manages block storage resources, such as: hard disks, RAID sets, flash and local NVMe drives. It provides dynamic provisioning of Persistent Volumes to a Kubernetes cluster and capabilities as:

  • Snapshotting
  • Online grow of volume sizes
  • Online synchronous replication
  • Asynchronous replication
  • Automated repeated shipping of snapshot deltas
  • Deduplication
  • Optional native RDMA instead of TCP/IP
  • Encryption at rest
  • Caching for any combination of: pmem, NVMe, SSD, HDD

This feature set is provided in a very lean way, guaranteeing the maximal IO performance with minimal consumption of CPU and memory. Freeing these precious resources for applications use.

With that it is perfectly suited for deployment with the application in a hyper converged way.

LINBIT SDS comes with a deep and rich Kubernetes integration consisting of an K8s- Operator, a CSI-driver, a Stork based scheduler extension and an HA-Controller.

It helps with fast failover of traditional applications in the OpenShift cluster. It supports life-migration for OpenShift Virtualization (formerly container-native virtualization; based on KubeVirt).

LINBIT SDS is available through http://marketplace.redhat.com for the IBM Z platform. In addition it is also available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux on x86 and Power platforms.

The applications that benefit from these features are

  • Transactional databases (OLTP)
  • Analytical databases (OLAP)
  • Enterprise message queuing
  • Persistent images of Virtual Machines
  • Persistent Volumes for Containers

Our existing customers value the high IOPs, low latency and low resource consumption with a rich landscape of integrations for archiving highly available operations with the most cost effective hardware investment.
