LINBIT announces Piraeus Datastore – Software-Defined Storage (SDS) for Kubernetes

Piraeus Datastore offers high performance, highly reliable SDS solution for Persistent Volumes in Kubernetes

 

San Diego, November 18., 2019 – LINBIT, the inventor of the open-source software DRBD™ and leader in Linux storage software, has announced the project “Piraeus Datastore”. Piraeus Datastore offers a fast, stable way for users to provide Persistent Volumes for their Kubernetes applications. It is developed under the open-source development model and has been made publicly available via pre-built packages and containers in a joint-effort between LINBIT, Daocloud and the open-source community.

Kubernetes is generating more and more buzz

Piraeus Datastore provides data persistence for elastic applications, which dynamically create or remove containers depending on the load. A recent survey of 390 IT professionals showed that 51% of participants acknowledge there has been an increase in Kubernetes adoption in the last six months. And 86% of respondents say they have now adopted Kubernetes. The number went up from 57% a half a year ago. Storage remains a requirement for enterprises that are beginning to move their applications over to Kubernetes and the Piraeus datastore solution is perfect for clients who need the combination of reliability and performance.

CSI Plugin for LINSTOR Complete

This CSI plug-in allows for the use of LINSTOR volumes on Container Orchestrators that implement CSI, such as Kubernetes.

Preliminary work on the CSI plugin for LINSTOR is now complete and is capable of operating as an independent driver. CSI is a project by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation which aims to serve as an industry standard interface for container orchestration platforms. This allows storage vendors to write one storage driver and have it work across multiple platforms with little or no modification.

In practical terms, this means that LINSTOR is primed to work with current and emerging cloud technologies that implement CSI. Currently, work is being done to provide example deployments for Kubernetes, which should allow an easy way for Kubernetes admins to deploy the LINSTOR CSI plug-in.  We expect full support for Kubernetes integration in early 2019.

LINBIT and OpenNebula Launch Reference Architecture for Container-Native Software Defined Storage (SDS)

VIENNANov. 8, 2018 – LINBIT, the pioneer in Linux-based Software Defined Storage (SDS) built on open source high availability, disaster recovery, and container technologies, today announced a reference architecture for SDS in collaboration with cloud platform leader OpenNebula. The architecture demonstrates how a container-native SDS solution can be deployed easily and deliver unprecedented speed and reliability. The companies have installed a powerful representative configuration in Frankfurt, Germany at a modern facility provided by e-shelter, one of the top data center operators in Europe.

LINBIT SDS is the only SDS solution that augments, rather than duplicate the storage management functionality that is already available in the Linux operating system,” said Brian HellmanLinbit COO.  “This simple but novel approach translates to a reliable feature-rich solution for large and small enterprise customers.”

Volume and configuration management is provided by LINSTOR, a software tool that serves as management console for LINBIT products, while fast and reliable data replication is delivered by DRBD, a part of the Linux kernel for nearly a decade.

“OpenNebula over LINSTOR enables a fully hyper-converged cloud with state-of-the-art orchestration and storage features, using OSS components exclusively,” said Constantino Vázquez, Engineering Manager at OpenNebula Systems. “The integration between the two couldn’t be more natural – they are a perfect fit.”

LINSTOR simplifies the management of block storage devices for Linux server clusters of any size. In addition, it is fully integrated with Kubernetes and OpenShift, which simplifies building, running, and controlling block storage.

OpenNebula is a turnkey enterprise-ready solution that includes all the features needed to provide an on-premises (private) cloud offering, and to offer public cloud services.
